May at the Cottage

May brings a beautiful abundance of fresh green shoots & leaves to our cottage garden. Each month of the year has their own beauty but I love the month of May the best of all.
~
The garden is scattered with cherry, apple & pear blossom. Each tree awaiting the lovely fruits which will hang from their branches. How truly blessed I feel when you see this blossom each year, nature is a marvelous thing.
~
Blue Tits are all around the garden bringing their pretty gentle song. Baby rabbits are back hopping around again, they are so sweet to see but we need to make sure the fence around the vegetable garden is secure.
~
Lilly of the Valley, Violets, Lilac & Cowslip are flowering in the garden, the smell of May is heavenly.
~

Cottage days are filled once again with weeding & planting up the vegetable garden.
The children find such joy in planting seeds & seeing them grow.
~
Ma's Plain Cake
This is a recipe I use again & again, it is a 6 egg mixture & makes a lovely large cake.
The recipe is in Ma Larkin Perfick Cooking.
This cook book is on of our family favourites.
~

We have had so many special moments since my last post.
We became Grandparent's for the first time.
Meet sweet Charlotte, how wonderful it was so hold her.
This little girl brings such joy to our lives.

Another tea cosy finished inspired by the colours of one I saw at the James Herriot Museum.

The twins celebrated their 7th birthday at the end of March.
Time flies, they are turning in to little ladies.
~

We had a new addition to the cottage last month, a 1947 Aga.
It cooks like a dream & keeps us beautifully warm too.
~

Lambing is now over in our village farm.
There were so many beautiful little babies born.
We were so lucky to be asked to watch as some were being born & Mary was amazed to be asked to pull a lamb out.
Mary is the type of child to just get stuck in, maybe we have a little James Herriot in the making.
This is Mary's lamb.
~

We love to walk the lanes & fields around our village.

Some beautiful magazine's I found from the thirties & forties.

A selection of cakes using these vintage pre war recipe booklet's.

Making Maids of Honor.
These are little jam tarts with a sponge topping.
Line little tart tins with shortcrust pastry & put a small amount of jam in them  I used homemade rhubarb jam.
The beat 2 ozs of butter with 2 ozs of sugar, 1 egg, 2 ozs of self raising flour & 1 tsp of almond essence.
Put a small amount of this on the jam & bake in a moderate oven for 15 to 20 minutes.

Thank you to all my dear readers for all their comment's, I have read them & am very sorry I have not replied to them all.
There has been a few things going on these last few months regarding our sweet Kitty.
We have decided to full time home school from September as we feel that would be best for the girls.
I hope everyone is having a beautiful Springtime.

Your new Granddaughter is beautiful, congratulations to you all.
My daughter Kittie used to love to help our local farmer with the lambing when she was younger. Spring is a wonderful time of year isn't it.
As usual your pictures are a delight to look at. I always enjoy reading your blog.

Your girls are looking lovely as always but I didn't realise you weren't home schooling full time already. I hope it goes well, if I were a mum of school age children I would certainly be doing it.
Lovely cakes too. since we moved and with Col so poorly I just can't get back into baking mode - but I really should!

    1. Hi Anna,
They went full time this year but it hasn't gone well with Kitty. She ended up with a hospital appointment because of movement and eye flicking she was doing. It has turned out to be Tics due to stress and nerves. She doesn't want to go to school and cries so much. It's boring too for both girls, they are very uninterested in what they are learning and that is not a lot. I feel so much better now we have come to a decision. The older children are coming to the end of secondary school so we won't do them.
Hope you come to a decision soon. Fondly Michelle

    2. Hi Michelle, I haven't commented before but I wanted to say that I home schooled my two youngest children, my daughter coming out of school at 7 and my son never starting. I have never regretted it and neither have they! Daughter is 29 now and my son 23. Both are happy in their lives both working and personal. My daughter had dyslexia and just never thrived in the class room even though it was a very small village school. I joined education otherwise, a very good and encouraging group. I still have the friends that helped me over twenty years ago. I am sure they will love their new life out of school and learning their own way! Debs

  22. Hello Michelle

So glad to see you post again but so sorry that Kitty has had a few problems. I think you are doing the right thing in the long run. My aren't the girls getting all grown up and Charlotte is gorgeous; another little blessing. Love the Aga - very jealous though as it is on my wish list. One day. The weather has been lovely here the past few days and the elderflowers are starting to come out so I shall have to go gathering to collect the heads for elderflower champagne, elderflower wine and elderflower syrup. I also have a recipe for Hawthorn blossom wine that I would quite like to try too. Everywhere looks fabulous when the blossom is out but I do feel so for those with hay fever. I am itching to get my beehives but I dare not as the elderly neighbour has a bad heart anyway and I think he would panic if the bees came home en-masse. Its lovely to have had you pop back - for me your blog reminds me of how my Nan's was when we were growing up something precious and undefined that I hope you never lose.

    Take care Michelle

  25. Congratulations on the safe arrival of your lovely new grand daughter, she is beautiful. It sounds like you have made the right decision in home schooling, they will learn so much more in a lovely home environment than in the test based and stress filled overfull classrooms that seem the norm at schools these days. It will be hard work but so worth it for their health, happiness and learning potential.

  27. Lovely post again Michelle I've missed your posts . Congratulations on the birth of your granddaughter she's beautiful . I'm glad you decided to homeschool if I had those years again ( my youngest is 10 ) I would do the same schools are full of tests and cramming everything in to the school day my daughter loves school and tells me what she's enjoyed each day but often says we didn't have time to finish this or that , pictures half painted and even crafts not completed really sad. It's not the teachers fault , crowded classrooms and government tests , reports and forms . You will give much valued one to one ( well two!) time and attention learning through things that interest them. A good decision .i look forward to seeing some lovely pictures as they learn. Xx

  28. I purchased a little cookery pamphlet off book depository and when it arrived I loved it and thought it was something you might like to know about. It is called Favourite Country Soups. It cost $5 Australian with free shipping, so probably about £2 for you. It has 34 soup recipes and lovely illustrations of different English country villages. It is new but has a lovely vintage feel and look to it.
